Principles of a Zen Garden

In Zen gardening, one mimics a natural landscape of oceans, waves, and landmasses represented by the rocks that are like islands in a vast, timeless ocean. According to the tradition, there is beauty in asymmetry. Rocks are grouped in odd numbers, often of three. These so called triads represent earth, man and the divine. The largest rocks are placed first to form the backbone of the formation. The smaller rocks must be placed such that they are in ‘good agreement’ with the main rock of the cluster.
